The city of Sumner publicly unveiled its municipal flag May 16, and it’s not South American in the least.
City Communications Director Carmen Palmer and Police Chief John Galle revealed the flag at the beginning of the city council meeting, before it goes to the Association of Washington Cities’ Parade of Flags in June.
The design includes three horizontal stripes in yellow, white and red, a daffodil and rhubarb stalk superimposed in green and “Sumner, Washington” printed across the center stripe.
“The yellow is for our daffodils, the red is for rhubarb, and the green represents our agriculture,” Palmer said.
The flag was a citizen initiative begun last year. Fundraising began at the Autumn Evening. Funds were initially short, but the members of council paid the financial gap out of pocket.
The first designs were sent back to the drawing table before the present flag came to fruition.
“This looks a lot less like Bolivia(‘s flag) than the first one,” Councilman Steve Allsop said with a laugh.
The flag likely will not fly on the City Hall flag pole in order to prevent wear-and-tear, but it will be on public display, Palmer said via phone.
