Aubrey Hanke was named Best of Show winner for her pen and ink drawing titled “Take a Step into my Reality” at the Enumclaw High School Art Show. Travis Maki was the People's Choice recipient for his scratchboard piece titled “Jimi.”
The show, which also featured student work from Enumclaw and Thunder Mountain middle schools and Southwood and Westwood elementary schools, drew more than 200 people on opening night March 27.
More than 350 pieces of artwork from the five schools were displayed. The event also included a teachers' table, where staff could exhibit and an area where students were presenting demonstrations.
Superintendent Mike Nelson hosted the awards ceremony.
Diane Franchini, Gary LaTurner, Ann Myia and Sylvia Neth judged the competition.
On another front, Enumclaw High's Kasia Goch recently earned the Renton Staff Choice Award at the Puget Sound Educational Service District's annual high school art competition for her mixed media piece titled “Wallflower.”
The competition is open to high school students in any public or state-approved private school in the educational service district region. Students enter their artwork at the regional level, with several pieces chosen to compete at the state level. Artwork is judged on creativity, composition and technique.
The Staff Choice Awards are selected by employees at the PSESD. Each piece is purchased for $200 and will become a part of its permanent collection.
Goch also earned a first-place award in glass and ceramics for her piece “Ahead” at the Enumclaw High show. Justin Weeks' “Vase” was a second-place winner in that category.

Drawing/Painting: first, Goch, “Aunt Giraffe,” watercolor; second, Samantha Olson, “Youth,” oil on canvas; third, Rebecca Schofield, “Roses,” watercolor and ink; honorable mention, Kristen Haggstrom, “Dove,” graphite, Raymond Wineman, “First Tracks,” graphite, Kaleigh Mitchell, “Me, Myself and I,” graphite and Hanke, “Freefall into Your Imagination,” watercolor.
Photography/Computer: first, Janelle Mascarelli, “Rotten to the Core,” photography; second, Jared Newman, “Snow Panorama,” photography; and third place, Brandy Pickering, “Unforgiven,” digital painting.
First place for Thunder Mountain Middle School went to Katrina Wood. Tyler Wetzel took second place and Danielle Thomas was third.
At Enumclaw Middle School, Sydney Agnew was first. Josh Peterson was second with Jennifer Hogan and AnnaMarie Forza third. Kyle Bozlee was named honorable mention.
