Authorities are still arranging the pieces of a puzzling incident that left a toddler dead Monday afternoon in Buckley.

It was shortly before 3 p.m. when a white pickup left state Route 410, traveled along the paved Foothills Trail and struck a small wagon. The 2-year-old boy was in the wagon, which was being pulled by his father; the father, who was not injured, attempted to pull the wagon away from the oncoming pickup, witnesses said.

Citizens attempted to revive the child, who was transported to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital and later pronounced dead.

The pickup was driven by a man who, after striking the wagon, crashed into a power pole. The 78-year-old driver, who has not been identified, was taken to an area hospital for unspecified injuries.

Investigators initially said they do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved.
