East Pierce firefighters were called to Snag Island Drive early Sunday morning to recover a truck that had found its way into the lake.
Firefighters found the truck shortly after 1 a.m. It appeared to have failed to negotiate a turn on the 20177 block; it was partially submerged in three feet of water.
“It doesn’t seem like it was too serious,” Chief Jerry Thorsen said Monday morning. “They were able to pull the truck out, no problem.”
Divers from East Pierce and the county Sheriff’s Department extended a tow line to the vehicle to haul it out.
The driver, however, was nowhere to be found.
There was no evidence of injury inside the cab of the truck, and it was believed the driver had escaped and abandoned the vehicle, Battalion Chief Jay Adams said in a press release.
To be sure, a team of firefighters searched the area around the truck by boat. Another group of rescuers searched underbrush along the shore. Both efforts turned up nothing.
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is investigating.
