An unattended candle caused a small fire in a trailer home in the 300 block of Park Avenue in Buckley Thursday.
Buckley firefighters responded to the call at about noon and put the fire out within five to seven minutes after responding, using very little water, Capt. Al Long said.
Three people were in the residence at the time of the fire. A small child was taken out immediately, but two adults who were in the house tried to return to either extinguish the fire or rescue pets, Chief Alan Predmore said, and were overcome by the smoke. Both were taken to Enumclaw Community Hospital for smoke inhalation treatment.
Two household pets were also rescued from the building. A cat and a dog were both given oxygen before taken to a veterinarian.
Predmore said the cat was not really breathing and was unresponsive when taken from the house.
"It was attended to by our folks who administered kitty-cat life-saving skills," Predmore said.
Only one room of the house sustained major fire damage, although the whole house sustained heavy smoke damage. Predmore said most of the real fire damage was confined to the room of origin, the bedroom. The fire started from an unattended candle on a bed headrest that was probably knocked over by a household pet, Predmore said, and lit the bed on fire.
