Vandals struck a private community park last week unsettling the residents and leaving plenty of damage and questions.
Jill Lauch and her husband Gus called the Bonney Lake Police Department the morning of Jan. 26 to report the Lake Jane Estates community park had been vandalized.
The park is at the intersection of 191st Avenue East and 68th Street East.
Lauch found graffiti spray-painted on the cement floor and all the tables of the covered picnic area. Playground toys next to the picnic area had been sprayed with graffiti and two tables were busted beyond repair. Lights were broken and a fixture was pulled down.
On the baseball field the benches were destroyed and graffiti was sprayed on a storage building and on the side of the pool building.
Lauch said she thought the crime was committed either Thursday night or the night of Jan. 24.
Words like Cripwood, Crip4life and Cripwood 24th were painted on walls and tables along with a smattering of obscenities.
The police are investigating the crime, but have not informed the Lauches of any arrests.
Lauch said in the past the only vandalism problems were the park's portable restrooms being burned.
“We've never had anything to this extent,” Lauch said. “The kids or whoever did this may not be bad. But they don't realize what it is costing. They don't think about the little kids.”
Lauch said an estimate for cleaning off the graffiti is more than $1,000.
The park is owned and maintained by the Lake Jane Estates Homeowners Association. Both the park and Debra Jane Lake are private with access for association members use only.
