In many cases heroes are regular people who make a difference by stepping up and taking action when someone’s in trouble and needs help. Sometimes the result can save a life.

Every year, the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board presents awards to real-life heroes or heroines who saved a life while on the job. Now’s the time to nominate people for this prestigious award.

The 2015 Governor’s Lifesaving Awards are presented to workers in Washington who saved a life in the past 12 months. All Washington workers covered by the state workers’ compensation system or a self-insured employer are eligible to be nominated.

The heroic act must have been performed during work hours and taken place between June 1, 2014 and May 31, 2015. The deadline for nominations is June 30.

The nominee must have performed “hands-on” aid in saving a life. For law enforcement officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians and other similar professions, the lifesaving action must be above and beyond the call of duty and cannot be part of their normal job responsibilities.

Past winners have received the award for actions like saving a man from an oncoming train, providing CPR to a stricken gym member and coming to the aid of a severely injured bicyclist.

The board also presents humanitarian awards to people who, despite their best efforts, were unable to save the life of the victim.

Award recipients will be featured guests at the 64th Annual Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Conference on Oct. 8 in Tacoma. The conference is sponsored by the Governor’s Industrial Safety and Health Advisory Board and the Department of Labor & Industries.
