East Pierce Fire and Rescue officials say there were no reports of injuries due to Sunday’s heavy winds, although the afternoon storm blew over trees and power lines, leaving some residents without electricity and snarling traffic for several hours.
East Pierce crews were called to weather-related incidents beginning around 2 p.m. as the winds began to bare down on the area. Sparking power lines caused a tree fire near the Sumner Square Shopping Mall on Main Street.
Several falling trees knocked down power lines on Sumner-Buckley Highway between Kelley Lake Road and 198th Avenue East, leaving large parts of Bonney Lake without power. Fire crews removed the trees, but the highway remained closed until the power company could repair the damaged electrical lines.
The outage shut down street lights on state Route 410, slowing traffic for more than an hour.
