Workshops, classes being offered locally

Several local organizations are offering parenting workshops and classes, most free of charge, in the area during January and February.

The classes being offered are:

• A free beginning financial education course from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Jan. 29, Feb. 5 and Feb. 12 at the Sumner Family Center. This class covers banking basic account management, budgeting, debt management, savings and investing, borrowing money, insurance, retirement accounts and credit reports. It also includes a free credit report and score and a $75 check to use at the Goodwill store. Call the Sumner Family Center at 253-891-6535 to register; childcare is not included.

• Becoming a love and logic parent, raising a successful teenager, will be offered free of charge from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Jan. 28, Feb. 4 and Feb. 11 at the Sumner Family Center. Register by callling 253-891-6535.

• Ready for Kindergarten is offered to families in the Sumner School District at no cost to parents or primary caregivers. Outside-of-district families are charged $45 to cover the cost of materials for each class plus a one-time $18 fee for orientation materials. Children who will be in the kindergarten classes of 2010, 2011 and 2012 are welcome at 6 p.m. Feb. 2 at Maple Lawn Elementary in Sumner or 6 p.m. Feb 23 at Emerald Hills Elementary in Bonney Lake. Children ready to enroll in the kindergarten classes of 2013 and 2014 are invited at 6 p.m. Feb. 12 at the Panther Cubs Learning Center at Bonney Lake High School.

• A free Strengthening Families workshop is scheduled for 5:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 2, Feb. 9, Feb. 16, Feb. 23, March 2, March 9 and March 16 at Mountain Meadow Elementary in Buckley. This workshop is designed for parents of children ages 9 to 14. Dinner and childcare are provided. Call Klara at 253-697-8408 or Danniel at 360-829-5883 to register.

• A Guiding Good Choices parenting class is set 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, April 13 through May 11 at Mountain Meadow Elementary. This course focuses on families with children ages 9 to 14 years. There is a free dinner and childcare. Call 253-845-9177 to register.

• A class on reframing and cultivating the gifts of children is set for Feb. 11 at the Sumner Family Center. Call 253-891-6535 to register.
