Yellow brick road to be followed tonight

Tonight, theatre-goers will be able to see Scarecrow, Tin Man, Lion, Dorothy and her little puppet dog, too. Sumner High School Drama is putting on a production of “The Wizard of Oz” at the Performing Arts Center May 13 to May 15.

“The Wizard of Oz is my favorite musical,” Director Rachel Street said. “And this department has never done it before.”

Spring musicals are typically larger productions, she said. But “Oz” will be particularly large: Forty-one high school students will perform in the show, accompanied by 22 elementary school students, 10 crew, a live orchestra and three school staffers playing munchkins.

Lilli Smith organized elementary students from across the district to play poppies in the deadly poppy fied segment of the show as part of her senior project, with help from freshman Austin Heatherly. Heatherly will play the namesake wizard of the show. His head will tower two stories above the audience, projected onto a suspended dummy head from pre-recorded video.

Diehard fans of the classic musical will be treated to the Jitterbug sequence that was cut from the movie version, in which an evil bug bites the main players, sending them into an involuntary dance song and dance number.

The show runs 7 p.m. tonight, Friday and Saturday. There will be a 2 p.m. matinee showing Saturday. Tickets are $8 for seniors and students, and $12 for adults.
