Seventeen Washington high school seniors – including Enumclaw’s Taryn Schreiner and Buckley’s Anna Goad – were in Pullman, Wash., to compete in the 2011-12 Distinguished Young Women scholarship program.

Contestants arrived in Pullman Aug. 2 to begin practicing several stage routines that highlighted Saturday’s competition at Washington State University’s Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum.

Each participant performed a talent number and participated in fitness and self-expression routines during the evening program. The teens met individually with a panel of judges earlier. In the end, more than $10,000 in college scholarships were awarded.

At the conclusion, Schreiner shared the program’s Spirit Award.

Participants stayed with Pullman families several days while rehearsing for Saturday’s on-stage program.

This was the 54th year of the scholarship program. Its goal is to emphasize education by providing scholarship opportunities to outstanding college-bound high school girls and to encourage personal development.

The Distinguished Young Women program was formerly known as America’s Junior Miss Scholarship Program.
