Dermot Frederick Shiels died peacefully at his residence in Bonney Lake, Washington on Sunday February 16, 2020.
He was born into adoption June 6, 1960 in County Cork, Ireland as Paul Mary Enwright. He was then adopted by his wonderful parents Noreen and Frederick Shiels, who changed his name to the more Irish Dermot Frederick Shiels. As a family they moved from Cork Ireland to Stockton California where Dermot was raised. Before his move up to Alaska in his mid twenties, he enjoyed riding his motorcycles and his time in the forestry in Northern California where he developed his loves for exploring, staying spontaneous and gardening.
His time in Alaska included finding his natural knack in construction and finish work which eventually led to his seemingly natural talent of woodworking and wood fine art projects. Which everyone loved receiving as gifts for any occasion. Commercial Fishing, managing Anchorage’s famous Chilkoot Charlies and Bird Creek Brewery, of course more riding of his motorcycles and raising his only son Sheridan.
In 1999 Dermot and Sheridan moved to Washington state, where after a little time of trying out new areas, they would find Enumclaw and the surrounding foothills and call it home. Dermot found his job at the Enumclaw school district where he stayed, planned to retire from and took great pride in. Eventually becoming the Head of Thunder Mountain Middle Schools custodial and maintenance staff. Which he liked to refer to as “having his own school”.
Dermot loved to live life spontaneously, help people, work meticulously on any project he could get his hands on, spend time with his family and close friends and most of all loved to ride Harley Davidsons.
He is survived by his son Sheridan and was preceded in death by his (adoptive) parents Honorah “Noreen” and Frederick Shiels.
A celebration of life will take place on Saturday March 21, 2020 from 11:30 to 1:30pm in the Enumclaw High School commons with a reception to follow directly after.
In lieu of flowers, please make any donations out to the Enumclaw Schools Foundation at www.enumclawschoolsfoundation.org.
