Geraldine Garton

Geraldine Lee Garton died Nov. 22, 2023, at the age of 72.

Geraldine Lee Garton was born in southern California on November 15, 1951 to Gerald and Dottie Cairns. She was the daughter of a Navy father which meant the family frequently moved. When she was 10 years old they settled next to a boy named Robert Garton, and he would become her soulmate, best friend, and husband. Teir love story would span six decades.

From a young age Gerrie knew she wanted to be a teacher and after raising her two sons she went in pursuit of this lifelong dream. In 1989 the dream became a reality, and for the next 30 years she poured her heart into the lives of the children and families she served. Her passion and skill were rewarded with advancement.

In 2009 she became principal of Black Diamond Elementary, a position she was proud and honored to hold. She left indelible marks on the school and on the building itself, having influenced its remodeled design.

In 2021, Gerrie made the difficult decision to retire, but her love for children and her community never wavered.

On November 22, 2023, Gerrie went home to the Lord after an 18-month battle with illness. She will be greatly missed, but her heart will continue to dwell in the thousands of lives she came into contact with. She is survived by her husband: Robert Garton, two sons: Michale Garton and Bryan Garton (Brandy), five grandchildren: Addison, Corrina, Justice, Asher, and Joseph, a brother: Jim Cairns (Jennifer), two sisters: Donnel Jones and Ruth Simmons (Doug Ford).

With a Heart Full of Gratitude, an event to honor Gerrie, will be held at Black Diamond Elementary on Sunday, December 10, 2023 at 1:00 PM.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Gerrie Garton Legacy scholarship fund. Donations can be made directly to the district office.
