Enumclaw resident Gladys Elaine Plowden died Oct. 3, 2018, at the age of 103.
She was born June 23, 1915, in Wynola, California, to Dr. Leland Stanford Wellington and Ida Bailey Wellington. She graduated from Julian High School in 1933 and graduated from San Diego State College in 1936 with a degree in nursing. On June 24, 1936, she married James E. Plowden in San Diego, California and spent the next 32 years traveling the county while he was in the Navy. After 1963, she worked as a teacher at Christ the King Elementary School in Norfolk, Virginia, and St. Elizabeth School for Special Needs and Education in Baltimore, Maryland. She was an avid tennis player and golfer.
She is survived by son James Plowden of Enumclaw; sister Irene Kitchin of Jamul, California; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Commander James E. Plowden Jr. in 1998 and daughter-in-law Lucy Matricciani Plowden in 2009.
A service will take place at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at Dulaney Valley Memorial Garden and Mausoleum in Timonium, Maryland.
