LeRoy Johnson passed away on July 11, 2024, in Tacoma, Washington, due to complications from a stroke. LeRoy’s family was grateful to be by his side during his final hours.
LeRoy lived a full life and was active until the end. From boyhood on, he shared his love of hunting, fishing, camping, off-roading, and RVing with family and friends. He and his wife Eunice were founding members of the Tiger Mountain
4 Wheelers jeep club in Issaquah and were active in it through the 1980’s.
Boating and camping adventures continued until recent months. In later years they were members of Great American RV Club and spent many winters in
Arizona in their motor home.
LeRoy had a distinguished career with the Washington Department of Natural Resources and is remembered for his efforts to improve wildland firefighting techniques and capabilities in the state. Following retirement he served as a Pierce County Fire District 12 commissioner. He was also active in his
neighborhood property owners’ association for many years.
He was a member of the Society of American Foresters and Family Motor Coach Association.
LeRoy was born January 4, 1940, in Seattle to Ole and Gladys Johnson, the second of 4 children. In 1950 the family moved to Beaver Lake near Issaquah, becoming one of the first families to live on the lake all year. After graduating from Issaquah High in 1958, he attended Everett Community College and then joined the Army National Guard. He graduated from the University of
Washington with a degree in forestry in 1966. Along the way he met and married Eunice Hampton. They moved to the Buckley area in 1966 and had 61 happy, memory-filled years together.
Besides Eunice, LeRoy is survived by his sons Erick (Amber) of Anchorage, Alaska, and Jeff (Mike) of University Place, three granddaughters and his sister Judy Hurley of Belfair. A private celebration of life will be held for family and close friends.
