Ronald D. Evans died Sept. 30, 2018, while a resident of Expressions Memory Care in Enumclaw. He was 92.
He was born March 7, 1926, in Onida, South Dakota, to the late Ruth (Doner) and John Evans. He was the middle child of three siblings and was raised in the farming community of Agar and Onida. He graduated from Agar (South Dakota) High School and was valedictorian of his class. He enlisted in the Army Air Force Jan. 5, 1944, with his service entry at Fort Logan, Colorado. He received the American Theatre Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal and was discharged Dec. 10, 1945, at Lowry Field in Colorado.
He married Edith I. White on Dec. 18, 1948, at the Methodist Church in Rapid City, South Dakota. They raised six children – sons Randal, Monte, Thomas, Mark and Russel and daughter Meredith – on a farm in South Dakota. He graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines in 1950 with a bachelor of science degree in geological engineering. He then worked for the Anaconda Copper Mining Company in Butte, Montana, for eight years. While in Butte he continued his education at Montana State College, earning a bachelor’s degree in secondary education. He taught math and physics at Butte High School for several years before returning to South Dakota to resume farming and raising his kids. In addition to farming, he taught at the Cass Country School and later at Onida High School. Upon his retirement from farming he attended the University of South Dakota earning a master’s in business administration. He worked a couple of years in Pierre, South Dakota, for the South Dakota Department of Transportation before moving to Rapid City, South Dakota, and then onto Enumclaw in 1986 to be closer to family living in Washington state.
During his retirement in Enumclaw he enjoyed climbing several of the local mountains. His favorite was Mount Peak, which he climbed in excess of 2,000 times. He enjoyed walks around his local residential block in addition to attending to his large lawn and garden. He enjoyed hunting big game and pheasants. He also enjoyed his eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brother Oliver Evans, sister Irmel Hamm, wife Edith and their daughter Meredith Reinhardt.
