“Roses are red violets are blue, I’m so glad I remembered to buy some flowers and candy or I would sure be in trouble with you!”
Yep, Valentine’s Day is here today as I write this column. This annual commemoration, held on February 14, reminds us to demonstrate our affection towards someone we love by our actions. Saying “I love you” just doesn’t cut it. It’s a time where they expect us to “show me you love me!” That’s when we usually make a dash to the store at the last minute and buy some flowers, a card, or some candy. However, for “big points,” you plan ahead by making reservations to some fancy restaurant and giving a well-thought-out gift; and usually the night ends up a success. Then tomorrow comes and well ….we typically go back to the normal routine until next Valentine’s Day.
I guess Valentine’s Day is a good reminder that “love” is more than a word. Real love is demonstrated by our daily actions. In fact, we get the name for this commemoration from a Christian martyr whose name was Valentine. He was willing to show his love to God by dying for his faith.
Jesus also reminds us to “show love” all the time and not just speak it. “A new command I give you: Love one another as I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34-35) This kind of love will demonstrate to the non-believing world that we are truly Christians.
So the question to ask oneself is “Are people convinced I am a Christian by how they see me treating other Christians?” “Do people `see’ real love by my actions?”
Most of us will not have to die to prove our faith. But all of us have the opportunity to live out our faith by loving one another. I will keep this short and sweet because I have to run to the store and get some….. well you know. Happy Valentines’ Day!
