Third-year head coach Maurice Dudley expects big things from the Sumner Spartans boys track team this season.
“We don’t have a lot of seniors and we’re going to be a young team,” he said, “but we have some athletes who should do some good things.”
Senior Zach Barry, who also runs cross country, will lead the Sumner distance runners.
“Zach is a strong long-distance runner and he can run anything from the 800 to 3,200,” Dudley said. “I expect him to be a strong contender to state.”
Sophomore Jacob Layton should join Berry as a solid competitor in the long distance races.
Senior Ryan Halverson, who hasn’t ran track since his sophomore year, could be a surprise in the league.
Dudley said he was impressive as a freshman and was part of the 4×100 relay team which missed state. Halverson is expected to compete in the 100 and 200 meters and on the relay team.
“He could be a sleeper,” Dudley said. “A lot of people haven’t seen him run in a year. He has extremely good speed and most people have forgotten about.”
Senior Kyle Brennen will run the 110 and 300 hurdles, along with sophomore Casey Coffman.
Senior Jordan Hanni is the Spartans’ “utility performer,” Dudley said. Hanni will compete in the long and triple jumps, and can sprint.
Junior Alex Carter is expected to be a strong contender in the discus and shot put. Dudley said Carter was exposed to plenty of good throwers as a sophomore and expects him to have good season.
“This is a rebuilding season for us, but we have some young talented athletes for the future,” Dudley added.
Sumner’s opens at home against Timberline Tuesday.
