Bonney Lake High girls basketball coach Tom Ostrander does not find himself in an enviable position as the 2010-11 campaign unfolds, despite coming off last season’s success story that had the Panthers competing in the Class 3A state tournament.
Sharpshooting guard Marcel Pounds has graduated and moved on to Western Washington University. Additionally, rebounding stalwart Rani Wiegand has transferred to neighboring White River High and ball-handling wizard Cheyann Clarke has moved to Arizona.
There are a few rays of sunshine, the first of which is the return of Pounds’ younger sister, Naomi. She played a part in getting the Panther girls to the big dance last year and is touted as owning an adequate outside jump shot.
Also helping out will be veteran guard Carli Elwin, who will be bringing the ball up the floor for the Panthers. Elwin not only showed great scoring potential in last year’s state tourney, but should also furnish senior leadership and a knack for hauling down rebounds.
Ostrander is also working in a handful of the participants from the state soccer finals, including senior Savannah Moorehouse, who Ostrander said should be a varsity starter at some station, perhaps even at center.
