A dozen track and field participants from Sumner and Bonney Lake High School will be returning to Tacoma’s Mount Tahoma High for this weekend’s Class 3A state track and field championships, having qualified in that same stadium’s West Central District III event Friday and Saturday.
It was the usual suspects moving on for Sumner High. In the girl’s competition. Sumner senior spiker Ashlee Sincraugh qualified for state participation in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dash events, flying to clockings of 12.57, 25.29 and 57.90 seconds, respectively.
Bonney Lake’s distance ace, senior Veronica Stinnett, cruised to a victory in the Saturday finals of the 800- and 1,600-meter events with times of 2:12.95 and 5:05.21 seconds, respectively, and as a result will earn the inside track as the state favorite in her senior swan song out of Pantherville.
Stinnett’s sophomore cohort in the field events, Adara Winder, collected gold in the shot put finals as she managed a toss fully two feet further than any other 3A competitor. Winder, who has been a dominant putter all season, collected the blue ribbon with a hurl of 41 feet, 9 inches. Winder will also be state-bound in the discus event as she turned in a spin of 118-1 for fourth place.
For Sumner in the boys field finals, two familiar participants earned a trip to state competition this weekend in seniors Alex Griffith and Seth Rodriquez. In the boys javelin, Rodriquez outthrew the field with a toss of 187-7, while Griffith claimed first in the discus, spinning the saucer 178-7, and also represented the Sparts well with his shot put endeavor of 51-3, which was good for fourth place and the opportunity to better that mark at state.
Bonney Lake’s boys had no competitors in the final rounds of the field events, but had some good showings on the track Saturday. Senior Brandon Baumchen took first place in the 800-meter dash and earned a journey to state as he burned up his lane with a time of 1:56.
In the finals of the 300-meter hurdles, senior Jordin Andrade sizzled to a third place finish of 39.2. As well, the Bonney Lake 1,600-meter relay contingent of Andrade, Baumchen, Reed Hawkins and Brandon Barnett finished second with a time of 3:22..
Another well known 1,600 crew in the girls realm is the one from Sumner High, which broke a long-standing school record in its last meet of the regular season at Bonney Lake’s stadium.
This formidable foursome comprised of Leah DeDominces, Gabby DeGoede, Lauren Bulzomi and Tessa Hansen was fourth at districts with a time of 4:02.86 seconds, entitling them to advance to state along with the seventh-place Bonney Lake girls group of Leslie Cannon, Kimber Kober, Taylor Howick and Stinnett, which crossed the finish line at 4:08.23.
