Kurtis Grams topped off the Panthers’ week with a no-hitter Saturday against Auburn Mountainview at Cheney Stadium in Tacoma.
Grams helped the Bonney Lake High baseball team blank the Lions, 5-0, and handed the South Puget Sound League 3A leaders their third loss of the season.
The Panther defense played a big part in Grams’ achievement with superior play. Grams struck out two batters and walked four.
While the defense was solid, the Panthers scored all their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a scoreless deadlock.
Friday, Bonney Lake dropped an 11-8 game to Franklin Pierce at home.
The Panthers jumped out to an 8-1 lead after the first two innings, but Franklin Pierce scored six unanswered runs in the third and fourth to cut the margin by one. They took a 10-8 lead with a three-run sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh.
Derek Fugere had three hits to lead the Panthers, while Colton Nash added two including a single. Bonney Lake recored 12 hits.
Dylan Brown, who took the loss, gave up six hits and fanned six batters.
April 22, the Panthers downed Lakes, 4-2, for a league win at home.
Bonney Lake maintained a 3-0 lead until the fourth inning when Lakes scored a run with two outs. Lakes added another run with no outs in the fifth, but the Panthers put out the next three batters.
In the sixth inning, with two outs and a runner on third, the Lakes’ coach signals for the runner to steal home. Nash’s pitch sailed past catcher Brad Dawes, but Dawes recovered to toss the ball to Nash for the out at the plate.
Brown started off the sixth inning with a double, then Dawes moved him to third on a sacrifice bunt. Brown scored on Ryan Journey’s sacrifice fly for a 4-2 lead.
With one out and a runner on first, Bonney Lake coach Mike Olson called for Brown to take the mound. The final two Lakes’ batters flied and grounded out to end the game.
Fugere, the starter, pitched four innings to record the win. He fanned seven batters and gave up one earned run.
The Panthers finished with five hits and Kyle Yanisevich led the team with two.
