Chinook Little League falls to Redmond West, takes third in state

The local team won their first two state games, but were stopped short by their next two losses.

Having already claimed a district championship, the Chinook Little League All-Stars won two, lost two and placed third in the state tournament.

State tourney games were staged July 6-13 at the Heritage Park Recreation Center on South Hill. The double-elimination “intermediate” tournament (for players 13 and 14 years old) brought together the Evergreen State’s 10 district champions.

The Plateau-based Chinook crew opened state play with a pair of victories, defeating Redmond West 9-7 on opening day and, two days later, dispatching Greater Richland 3-2. That triumph pushed Chinook into a quarterfinal contest against the eventual state champions from Elma, which resulted in a 7-3 loss.

In a July 11 rematch with Redmond West, the Chinook squad scored in double figures but that wasn’t enough. A 14-11 defeat brought the season to an end, but also delivered third-place state honors.

Redmond West then knocked off Elma to force a championship finale, which Elma won 5-3.
