Enumclaw High’s 1-2 boys basketball squad trekked to Spokane’s Lewis and Clark High School over the weekend to participate in the 10-team Spokane Showcase preseason tournament.

The Hornets’ tourney action began Friday night against highly-touted Lake City High of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, with EHS falling 52-29.

Saturday, the Hornets took on Spokane’s Shadle Park Highlanders, a team EHS defeated in the later stages of last season’s Class 3A state basketball tournament.

The Highlanders boasted a pair of 6-foot, 7-inch towers to round out what Enumclaw coach Ted Carlson called “a very well-balanced attack.” Shadle Park had no problem this time around and handled Enumclaw 62-44.

Enumclaw’s D.J. Hitch and Terenn Houk combined for 23 points against Shadle Park in the setback.

“Even though we lost both games, the important thing was the experience we gleaned against two really good teams,” said Carlson, whose squad began its season Dec. 1 by defeating Plateau rival White River 59-49.

In that season opener for both teams, Enumclaw trailed for the majority of the first half, but it was a different story in the second stanza as Enumclaw got untracked by finding success with its interior passing that led to 6-foot-3 forwards Hitch and Brian Foerster scoring 23 and 13 points, respectively.
