The Enumclaw High boys water polo team missed qualifying for the state tournament Thursday when Auburn Mountainview snatched the fourth seed from the East Division from the Hornets’ hands with an 8-7 overtime win.

The game with the Lions was close with the score tied on five occasions, including at seven at the end of regulation.

Mountainview scored the contest’s first goal 17 seconds after the opening whistle. The Hornets answered when Garrett Hall, on the next possession, found the back of the net. Both teams scored once more in the first quarter, for two-all tie going in to the second period. Mountainview scored on a penalty shot midway through the second quarter, but Hall scored again on the next Enumclaw possession, to tie the game at three before halftime.

The Lions scored again early in the third quarter. Enumclaw’s Travis Culp scored four minutes in to the quarter to knot the score at four, before Mountainview scored twice in two minutes to jump ahead 6-4. Enumclaw fought back, scoring three goals in the final period, while holding the Lions to one score for the tie at the end of regulation. Both teams were scoreless in the first overtime period, but Mountainview scored 36 seconds in to the second overtime and kept Enumclaw scoreless for the victory and the state berth.

The top four seeds from water polo’s two divisions qualified for the state tournament, which begins Thursday at Rogers High in Puyallup.

Friday, the Hornets finished their regular season with a 7-6 overtime win over Puyallup.

The Vikings took the lead early and stretched it to 3-1 at the end of the first period and 5-3 by halftime. At the end of three periods, Puyallup was still ahead, 6-4, but the home-pool Hornets’ defense tightened and goals by Bennon VanHoof and Logan Ross tied the game at six at the end of regulation.

Both teams went scoreless in the first overtime. Hornet goalkeeper Josh Musick blocked a penalty shot to deny the Vikings the lead 30 seconds into the second overtime and sophomore Gabe Sales put the game away, scoring on a lob shot from the right side with 1:22 remaining.

Scoring for Enumclaw in the win were Ross with three goals, VanHoof with two and Will Cooper and Sales with one goal each.
