Enumclaw High opened the 2010 football campaign Friday in fine fashion, making the long trek to Yelm High School and pulverizing the Tornadoes 40-14.

The Hornets swarmed all over the stunned hosts, using both the pass and run to sprint to a 33-7 advantage at intermission.

Enumclaw’s experienced and skilled line went right to work as senior ball carrier Andy Holdener, who ran for 155 yards on 15 carries, capped the Hornets’ first scoring drive only moments into the game with a 16-yard scamper.

After Holdener broke the scoring ice, the first quarter misery continued for Yelm as the Hornets senior quarterback Dylan Podolak, who threw for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns on the brisk evening, hooked up with junior tight end Tyler Carlson on scoring aerials of 24 and 35 yards.

Enumclaw notched two more scores before halftime, as running back Marcus Joshlin busted loose on a 47-yard touchdown dash and Podolak found fleet-footed receiver Jason Greer wide open, connecting for a 30-yard scoring strike.

Enumclaw came out of the locker room and clinched the lopsided win when Holdener bolted down the left sideline for a 45-yard jaunt. He also legged his fifth extra point of the night through the uprights.

“Yelm was a big team for being Class AA,” said Holdener, who along with the majority of the EHS starters didn’t play in the fourth period. “We worked our butts off this summer and really earned this one. Those big guys on the line up front did a great job of giving Dylan time to throw and providing holes for the running backs.”

The Hornets journey to Union High Saturday for a noon kickoff.
