Chantelle Bailey scored a reversal in the final 40 seconds of action to claim the 171-pound title Saturday in girls wrestling action in Kelso. Bailey, the defending state champion from Enumclaw High, came from behind to beat Fife’s Faith Wasmund for the crown.
The Hornets finished ninth.
Hornet teammate Rose Johnson finished fourth, while Kassandra Renfrow was fifth and Logann Erskine was seventh. Freshman Jade Paterson was one match away from placing after losing an 11-9 overtime match to Johnson.
The Hornets also saw South Puget Sound League 3A action with Enumclaw Jan. 6 and Auburn Mountainview Thursday.
Against White River, Renfrow wrestled twice, losing to White River’s Dylan Fagan and then winning her second match.
Bailey defeated White River’s Kamyriah Padgett and Maranda Long, who bumped up a weight, and lost to White River’s Sam Lovelace.
The Hornets were not as lucky with the Lions with Paterson picking up the only win, by pin.
Enumclaw hosts Clover Park tonight, Wednesday, although coach Jerry Scheidt did not expect the Warriors to field a team and then will travel to Fife for a tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday.
