Paced by the three championships of Chantelle Bailey, Kassandra Renfrow and Jade Paterson, the Enumclaw High girls wrestling team finished runner-up to White River Saturday at the South Puget Sound League 3A subregional tournament at Auburn Mountainview High.

The Hornets finished with 109 points behind White River at 128. Foss, Auburn Mountainview and Mount Tahoma rounded out the top five in scoring.

Bailey, Renfrow and Paterson, along with Maranda Long, Logann Erskine and Rose Johnson, advance to Saturday’s regional tournament at Emerald Ridge High in Puyallup. There the top six wrestlers will earn a spot at Mat Classic, the state tournament, scheduled for Feb. 19 and 20 in the Tacoma Dome.

It was there a year ago that Bailey became the Hornets’ first state champion and the undefeated Hornet is well on her way to making it another.

The senior needed just two pins to earn her 171-pound title, including a 2-minute, 32-second one over Alanna Alegria of Auburn Mountainview for the crown.

It was Hornet versus Hornet in the 171-pound plus championship with freshman Jade Paterson getting the best of senior Rose Johnson. Johnson earned her way into the title round with a 37-second pin over White River’s Olivia Guinn, while Paterson scored a 2:20 pin over Wilson’s Jackie Thompson. Paterson got the jump on Johnson in the finals with a 48-second fall.

Renfrow, a sophomore, lost one by fall and then pinned Nyxalyse Springer of Lincoln in 2:11 for her 145-pound title.

After earning an 8-7 win and then dropping a close contest, Long picked up a pin and then topped Wilson’s Sara Ellington 9-4 for third place at 103 pounds.

Erskine finished fourth at 160 pounds. She earned a pin over teammate Carson Seitz before falling to eventual champion Sam Mitchell of White River. She then picked up another fall before falling to Anau Kaffuatu of Mount Tahoma. After her lost to Erskine, Seitz dropped a 13-7 decision for sixth, just missing a spot at the regional tournament and will serve as an alternate.
