By today, Wednesday, the four Plateau-area high schools will know who they are sending to the state golf tournament in May.
It’s a sure bet Enumclaw, both boys and girls, will send a team after the Hornets dominated the South Puget Sound League 3A medalist tournament Thursday at Eagle’s Pride Golf Course at Fort Lewis.
All four teams – Bonney Lake, Enumclaw, Sumner and White River – were sending representatives to part two of the tournament Tuesday. Results were not available at press time, but will be posted at www.courierherald.com.
On the boys side Thursday, Enumclaw golfers captured four of the top 10 spots. Forty-eight players qualified for the second 18 holes.
Enumclaw’s Jordan Beals finished in the No. 2 spot with a 2-over par 70. Tyler Salsbury and Jake Erickson finished two strokes back. Colton McCluskey closed the day at 78. Tim Livermore and sophomore Chase Dolliver, the junior varsity champion, carded matching 80s.
White River’s Connor Williams was the next top local golfer with an 81.
Sumner’s Austin Spanier earned his way into the second day with an 86.
Enumclaw’s Dylan Kleist and David Smith, shooting 87 and 88, respectively earned a spot on the Day 2 roster.
Spartan Brandon Barlow also came in at 88 to make the cut. One stroke behind at 89 was Bonney Lake’s Brian Duckett and White River’s Dalton Reynolds. Bonney Lake’s Josh Journey was the last to make the 92-stroke cut off.
Enumclaw won the team competition with a score of 466.
On the girls side, in what became a last-minute shortened field of playoff spots, five Enumclaw Hornets shot their way into the top 10, led by the 91 of Kelly Sweeney. Torey Schreiner carded a 94. Kaylee Salsbury, 96, Caitlin Runland, 97, and the junior varsity champion, freshman Tiffany Wilkening, 98, rounded out the Top 10.
Bonney Lake’s Tracy Hare was also a Top 10 finisher. She closed out the 18 holes with a 95 to put her at fifth.
White River’s Tia Johnson scored one of her best rounds of the season to finish at 98 for the No. 9 spot.
Enumclaw’s Janie Francis and Sumner’s Rebecca Turcotte with matching 102s are in for Day 2.
Spartan Danielle Durham advances to Day 2 with her 104, as does Enumclaw’s Claire Hinman at 105.
Enumclaw’s No. 2 finisher at the junior varsity tournament, Molly Roe, earned her slot shooting a 109.
Bonney Lake’s Megan Charron and White River’s Rebecca Norris made the cut with 110s.
The Panthers’ Courtney Bartlett, Ali Ronnfeldt and Anna Babbitt also still have a shot at making state.
Sumner golfers Sydney Drever, Karleigh Warner and Megan Cihak took the final three spots into the tournament.
The Lady Hornets from Enumclaw coasted to the title with a team score of 585. Bonney Lake was the next highest local finisher at 686 for fourth.
The Hornets, both boys and girls teams, also won the SPSL 3A Academic Championship with a 3.61 combined cumulative grade-point average.
