Plenty of future Major League Baseball players have sharpened their skills on the diamond at Tacoma’s Cheney Stadium. On the afternoon of April 19, it was the Enumclaw High Hornets’ turn to show their stuff.
The Hornets didn’t disappoint their fans on hand, posting a 6-2 victory over the Steilacoom Sentinels.
Playing on the home field of the Tacoma Rainiers – the top-level farm team for the Seattle Mariners – the highly-regarded Enumclaw squad improved to 13-0 in South Puget Sound League 2A play and 15-1 overall.
The victory was highlighted by the efforts of pitcher Cooper Markham, who tossed a no-hitter. In his seven innings of work, the junior didn’t allow an earned run and fanned seven Sentinel batters.
Offensively, Enumclaw was paced by Garrett Chavis who had two hits and drove in a pair of runs. Eli Murphy scored a pair of runs to boost the winning effort.
Through games of last week, Enumclaw was ranked No. 3 in the state’s Class 2A ranks, according to the RPI formula used by the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association. The Hornets trailed only No. 1 Selah High and No. 2 Othello.
