It took four overtime periods, but the Enumclaw High boys water polo team put away Auburn 9-8 Thursday.

The win improved the No.6-ranked Hornets’ league record to 4-1.

Before the home crowd, Auburn started strong, scoring three opening-quarter unanswered goals. Behind the strong arms of Travis Culp and Garrett Hall, the Hornets got on the board in the second quarter, but couldn’t keep pace with the Trojans, who took a 6-2 advantage into the half.

The quick breather was all the Hornets needed, coming out with a third-quarter scoring spree led by Hall, Bennon VanHoof and Thomas Petersen. Hall tied the game at six in the fourth quarter. Auburn answered for the lead with four minutes left in regulation, but VanHoof knotted the score at seven with 54 seconds on the clock.

Both teams went scoreless in the first 3-minute overtime and traded goals in the second overtime, forcing the game into sudden death overtime. Again, the two teams were shut out in the first sudden death period; Hall scored on a lob over the Trojan goalkeeper 92 seconds into the fourth overtime period for the win.

The EHS senior captain finished the night with four goals including the game-winner. Defensively, the Hornets tallied 15 steals while goalkeeper Josh Musick gathered 37 saves. The game had 38 minutes and 32 seconds of playing time, and lasted nearly 90 minutes.

EHS beat Stadium 11-6 Sept. 28 at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center.

The Hornets scored early, 96 seconds into the opening quarter on a goal from five meters by VanHoof. Hall, added one of his game-high four goals, before the end of the quarter.

The Hornets controlled the second quarter, adding four goals while holding the Tigers scoreless.

In addition to Hall’s scoring rampage, VanHoof added three, while Braden Dedrick, Gabe Sales, Logan Ross, and goalkeeper Musick each added one. Musick also gathered 26 saves.
