The tournament in Kelso had over 250 girl participants from over 41 schools from both Washington and Oregon. The Hornets finished 10th overall with 5 girls out of 7 placing 2nd in their respective weight classes.
118 – Jaelen Hobert wrestled and won her first two matches by fall. Then lost by a decision in the finals by a decision of 9-2 to Tami Bigley of LaCenter High School to finish 2nd in the B-Bracket of competition. Jaelen had a great day and gained some confidence in this tournament. She is doing well for a first year wrestler and currently has a 7-6 overall record.
124 – Kristen Green wrestled and also won her first two matches at 124 and also won both of her matches by fall in the 4 minutes in her first match over Karen Lewis of Bethel and Shelby Hamby of Kalama in the second round at the 3 minute mark. Then she also lost in the finals for 1st and 2nd place in the B-Bracket to Cindy Cox of Spanaway Lake 6 – 5 to finish off the day in 2nd place.
137 – Raquel Cormier also wrestled her way to a 2nd place finish in the 137 B-Bracket at Kelso. She won her first match over Meza Muniz of Pasco by fall in 3 minutes. Then She pinned Sandi Fairchild of Fort Vancouver in 4 and a half minutes to advance to the finals. THen in the finals she lost a 6-3 decision to also end up in 2nd place.
145 – Danielle Cormier place second in the 145 A-Bracket losing in the finals to Kaylee Reynolds of Kelso, who was 3rd in state last year at 137lbs by fall with 7 seconds left her final match. The final match started with Danielle taking Reynolds to her back and almost pinning her a minute and a half into the first round. Then both ladies battled and scored no points in the second round. Then in the final round, Reynolds came back fast by scoring 5 points to tie up the score and then Cormier gave a penatly point and with seconds left in the match got called for a fall to lose and take 2nd place. On her way to the finals. Danielle pinned 3 opponents in less than 6 minutes setting up her finals match with Reynolds.
155 – Ally Smith did not place in her first 155 varsity tournnament. She lost both of her matches by fall in the first round. In her second match, she hit her head hard and suffered a concussion in her loss and that ended her day. Hopefully she will be back this week. The trainer was optamistic that she may be able to return by this week to competition.
235 – Enumclaw had 2 ladies in the 235lb weight class (A-Bracket) at Kelso. Chantal Capps saw her first action since being hurt at the Auburn Mountainview Tournament in December. She lost her first match by fall after taking her girl down to her back and scoring a takedown and nearfall. However, she was reversed and lost by a fall. Then in consolation she pinned Channa Torbergeron from Fife in the second round, then lost fall to Katelyn Purkeypyle of Washougal in the 3rd round to miss earning a medal in the tournament. On the other side of the A-Bracket, KC Moulden pinned her first girl in 17 seconds (Shawna Higuea) of LaCenter to find her way into the EHS records with one of the fastest 5 pins of all time. Then in her next round she won by fall in 1 min over Tina Gillespie of Centrailia to advance to the finals. In the finals, KC was upset by Misoka of Fife when she was caught by her during her shot and tossed to her back and pinned. KC was surprised and in her aggression got caught. Misoka has been trying to figure out a way to beat KC since last year. This is the first time she has beaten her. They wrestled for 3rd and 4th in state last year and it will be one of KC’s biggest challenges this year as well. She will get her opportunity next weekend at Fife to see her again as the Hornets will be in the Rick Sales Tournament next Saturday at Fife High School, starting at 10 am.
