The 3 hornets that represented EHS at regionals was 118lb Jaelen Hobert, 145lb Danielle Cormier and 235lb KC Moulden.
Hobert started off wrestling the top ranked 118lb wrestler in the state from Federal Way Bianca Arizpe who was 5th in state a year ago. Hobert wrestled well and fought off Arizpe constant attacks and lost by fall in 1:48. In her second match, Jaelen wrestled Arizpe’s teammate Jenny Jacobs and was trailing 3-1 going into the 3rd round. Then in the 3rd round, Jacobs got a close takedown and put Hobert to her back to win by fall at the 4:32 mark and end Hobert’s rookie season with a 12-11 record and the experience of wrestling at the regional tournament level.
At 145lbs Danielle Cormier started the day off with a quick 1st round pin over Carley Horn of Kentwood in 1 minute and 2 seconds. Then in the semi-finals, Daniel won by a technical fall over Kylie Norton of White River 18-1 when she had a number of nearfalls to win and advance to the finals. In her finals match, Cormier ran into last years 3rd place finisher and undefeated Todd Beamer girls Vanessa Dixon. Dixon controlled the match from the start and after leading 7-0 won by a fall just before the end of the second round to run her undefeated record to 24-0. Cormier currently has a 25-4 record on the season and she will enter the state tournament this next weekend as a number 2 seed in the 145lb bracket.
Finally for the hornets was KC Moulden at 235. In the first round, Moulden had a Bye and then matched up with Fife’s Kimeko Misoka in the semi-finals to see who would advance to the finals. Moulden gave up a early takedown and then escaped and took Misoka down before giving up a late reversal to trail 4-3 at the end of the first round. Then in the second round, Moulden won the decision and chose up and broke Misoka down and rode her most of the round before pinning her with 6 seconds left in the second round to advance to the finals to meet Hannah Lewandowski of White River for the regional championship. Moulden got out to an early 10-4 lead and had Lewandowski on her back twice in the first round before choosing up in the 2nd round. In the second round Moulden got reversed and was unable to get out and lost by fall to Lewandowski to end up 2nd in the region and advance to the state tournament as a 2nd seed next weekend at the Tacoma Dome for the State Tournament.
“I was proud of the girls on Saturday. Each weekend gets tougher and to have 2 girls advance and a freshman make it and get the experience of wrestling at regionals will help us for next year. I know the girls might be disappointed that they didn’t win the regional title, but they have a chance to redeem themselves and learn from this for state. I believe in them and we will work to correct some things that will help them next week. I look forward to them having a great weekend in Tacoma next weekend.” said Coach Scheidt of his wrestlers.
