It snowed and hailed Sunday, which can only mean one thing in Enumclaw – it’s time for baseball season.

The Enumclaw Hornets opened the season Friday with a 3-2 victory over the Federal Way Eagles and hopes are high on the team and in the stands.

The Hornets are looking to win their fourth straight South Puget Sound League 3A South title.

Coach Eric Fiedler lead the team to a fifth-place finish in the state tournament last year and third in 2010.

Fiedler has consistently found success working with Plateau boys and the team looks solid once again.

Fiedler said senior Tyler Carlson is expected to be one of the highlight players. Carlson, who has committed to Washington State University, will play center field, hit in the power spot in the middle of the lineup and throw on the mound.

Carlson closed the door Friday on a Federal Way rally.

The coach said Carlson hit six home runs last year and will get his cuts again this year.

Shortstop Colton McCluskey, a senior, will hit near the top of the order.

“He is critical to our infield,” Fiedler said. “He is very steady and he has experience.”

The potential one-two pitching duo for the Hornets will be Kevin Nelson, a senior, and Bryce Peterson, a right-handed sophomore.

Nelson played some varsity innings last year and he will also play some infield.

Fiedler said Peterson is “tall and athletic. He’s a great athlete.”

Peterson started the game against Federal Way, picking up the win.

The game against Federal Way showed the Hornets can settle down and play between the lines when a team is charging at them.

The next SPSL game for the Hornets is at 7 p.m. March 21 at home against Lakes High.
