The Enumclaw High senior tandem of Anna Nelson and Lauren Redman finished sixth Saturday to bring home a medal from the Class 3A girls state tennis tournament in Vancouver, Wash.

“They had a great tournament,” coach Rick Carel said. “All four of the girls played well.”

The Hornets also took seniors Julie Sanders and Breanna Pierce to the tennis center and the pair might have kept going, but had to play teammates Nelson and Redman in a loser-out contest.

Nelson and Redman won their opener over Holly Russell and Alysia Noriega of Everett 6-1, 6-3, then lost to eventual state champions Anissa Bryant-Swift and Malia Lum of Sammamish 6-1, 6-7(5), 1-0(9).

“They were one point from beating the state champions in the semis,” Carel said.

The Hornet duo then faced teammates Sanders and Pierce, winning 6-4, 6-2. It was a bit of last year’s state tournament all over again as the two faced Becky Sharpe and Cassandra Dicken of Handford, this time winning 6-4, 6-2. Playing for fourth or sixth place in the final match of the day, the Hornets lost 6-0, 6-1 to Christina Le and Megan Carter of Union, who use the Vancouver site as their home court, Carel noted.

For seniors Sanders and Pierce the tournament started with a loss to Kate Jameson and Grace Porter of Bainbridge Island, 6-1, 6-0. The pair rallied to top Blake Henley and Jannalee Gould of Highline in the next round 6-4,7-6(7) before facing Nelson and Redman.

“It’s a bit overwhelming,” Carel said. “All these club kids are phenomenal.”

“They’ll be hard to replace,” Carel said of the senior foursome. “They’re good tennis players and good people.”
