The Sumner American Legion U19 baseball squad is nearly done with its season and had compiled a 5-10 record.
There are a few familiar faces on the squad from the Sumner High squad including Cameron Steffey, Tanner Brinkman, Evan Carl and Brady Cooper, but coach John Welker says his crew is inexperienced and doing baseball battle with teams that have community college players.
“We are doing pretty well considering that the deck is sort of stacked against us,” stated Welker, “but we are basically building for the future with these kids.”
The Sumner squad, which includes a few players from the Bonney Lake (Lane Harry) and Orting (Braden Cordes, Nick Wilkins and Danny White), will have a full dance card this week. At 1 p.m. Thursday on the SHS diamond, the Sumner bunch will host the first of four doubleheaders against league opponents.
Admission is free and the diamond marathon gets under way with a quadrant of double headers commencing with Bellevue’s contingent Thursday, followed by a trio of two-game afternoons against Centralia, Seattle’s Rainiers and Seattle’s Bombers Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Welker maintained the success of his group’s summer campaign could hinge on finding a groove during this stage of the mid-July docket, because if they win most of their home outings they could find themselves in postseason play.
