Football: Enumclaw crushes Titans, White River falls to Fife

The Hornet machine simply could not be stopped.

Both of the Plateau’s prep football programs sport break-even records after two weeks of play. Their most recent outings, however, brought very different results.

Here’s a look at how things went last week and what’s coming up.

ENUMCLAW

After scoring just a lone touchdown during a Week 1 loss to Decatur, the EHS offense erupted during a home-turf, 47-0 blowout victory over Todd Beamer High.

On a near-perfect Friday night, the Hornet machine simply could not be stopped while the Beamer boys appeared flummoxed from the opening snap. The Titans were flagged for delay-of-game penalties twice during their first possession and things never seemed to get better for the Federal Way-based squad.

The Hornets, of course, had much to do with that. When the offense wasn’t exploding, the defense registered a touchdown of its own. The Hornets pressure kept the Titan quarterback on the run most of the evening.

Enumclaw scored early on a long toss from junior QB Gavin Trachte to Colton Paulson and the Hornets quickly built a lead. After finding the end zone twice in the first quarter, EHS stretched its lead to 33-0 by halftime. With the “running clock” rule in place for much of the second half, the Hornets still managed a pair of TDs.

Next up for Enumclaw: If early-season outcomes mean anything, the Hornets’ next game could provide something of a breather.

Enumclaw will be on the road for a September 20 contest against Kentlake. The Falcons were walloped 37-0 by Todd Beamer in Week 1 and fell 47-7 to Auburn Mountainview in Week 2 action.

WHITE RIVER

From the high of an overwhelming Week 1 victory to the low of a lopsided Week 2 loss – that’s the storyline thus far for the White River High football program.

The 2024 campaign debuted September 6 with a 50-18, home field victory over Thomas Jefferson High that also served as the Hornets’ maiden voyage into the waters of the 3A North Puget Sound League. The excitement was short lived, however, as the squad evened its record the evening of September 12 with a blowout loss to the Fife Trojans.

White River was on the road for the showdown with Fife, which remains in the South Puget Sound League 2A. That’s the former home of White River, which jumped to the larger Class 3A status this season.

Hornet coach Wyatt Evenson acknowledged that Fife is awfully good, boasting a couple of future collegiate Division I players. He sees the Trojans eventually winning the SPSL 2A title.

Against a quality foe a team cannot be guilty of crucial mistakes early in the game. And that’s exactly what the Hornets did, digging a hole by surrendering two intercepted passes.

Next up for White River: Now, the question is how the team will bounce back from its 48-0 drubbing at the hands of the Trojans.

The Hornets will answer that query this Friday, September 20, when they host the Auburn Mountainview Lions. Game time is 7 p.m. at Arrow Lumber on the White River High campus.

Like White River, the Lions are sitting at 1-1 on the young season. Auburn Mountainview opened with a 41-18 loss at the hands of the Federal Way Eagles but responded last week with a 42-7 thumping of Kentlake.
