GIRLS BASKETBALL | Jan. 13: Sumner drops first SPSL 3A game to White River

After breaking a 54-all tie, White River went on a 10-4 run to close out the game and take over first place in the South Puget Sound League 4A standings.

Four White River players scored in double figures as the Hornets handed the Sumner girls their first loss in South Puget Sound League 3A play, 64-58, at home Jan. 12 before a packed crowd.

With the win, the Hornets sit in first place in the league with Sumner in second.

Sumner’s Erika Olson drilled a 3-pointer to open the scoring, but WR answered with a couple of baskets.

Olsen hit another 3-pointer and Angie Wagar-Sanchez added another for an 11-8 lead with 3:55 to go in the first period.

Tyeanne Lubking’s short jumper gave the Spartans a 17-12 lead – their largest in the game.

Early in the second period, the Hornets cut the Sumner margin in one, 19-18, with a pair of free throws. WR fought back to regain the lead before halftime, 32-31, thanks to a 3-point play and a pair of free throws by Brooke Paulson.

Paulson finished the game with 19 points.

Sumner started the second half regain the advantage on a bucket off a Wagar-Sanchez steal. Both teams traded the lead back-and-forth in the third.

Kendell Theden and Laree Rommell each scored a basket as Sumner took a 43-42 lead into the final quarter.

Paulson’s 3-pointer early in the final stanza help WR regain the advantage, 47-45, but the Spartans once again regain the margin on a layup by Kaitlin King and Lubking’s 3-pointer with 5 minutes to play.

Wagar-Sanchez hit a running jumper and Lubking hit a long jumper to add to the Sumner lead, 54-51, before WR called a timeout with 3:44 to go.

Seconds later, Paulson hit another 3-pointer to tie the game at 54-all.

The Hornets closed the quarter with a 10-4 run to seal the win.

Wagar-Sanchez led Sumner with 19 and Lubking tossed in 13.

Carley McCutchen hit 15, Sabra Sproul had 14 and Megan McKune added 12 for the Hornets.
