The Sumner High girls basketball team has proven itself a worthy opponent, squeaking past Class 4A Spanaway Lake 59-58 Dec. 2 and beating North Thurston 58-46 Dec. 4 before losing to Seattle Christian 70-59 Dec. 5.
In the Seattle Christian affair, in which Tyeanne Lubking scored 20 points and teammate Kaitlin King scored 17, Sumner fell behind 16-8 in the first quarter.
The purple and gold showed some grit though, storming back in the second quarter to take a 28-26 advantage at intermission, before being buried by a Seattle Christian 44-point surge in the second half.
Against North Thurston, Sumner’s Lubking and Angie Wagar-Sanchez combined for 24 points – a dozen apiece –to provide most of the scoring.
The Spartans’ initial encounter of the season was a nail biter as Sumner pulled ahead early, but had to hold on for the victory as Spanaway Lake scored 14 points in the fourth period and nearly pulled out the win.
South Puget Sound League 3A action got under way Tuesday when Sumner hosted Enumclaw. Sumner will hit the road Friday to lock horns with Peninsula at 7 p.m.
