Sumner’s cross country teams finished a soggy Saturday’s sub-district tournament in top spots, qualifying for this weekend’s West Central District III races.
The girls team won the entire subdistrict meet and earned South Puget Sound League 2A title honors.
“Our girls team has had some success in… recent years and won league, but hasn’t won the entire subdistrict meet since 2007,” coach Kristin Chapman said.
The lady Spartans were additionally awarded the league Sportsmanship Award.
Abi Hensler took second place overall finishing at 19 minutes, 53 seconds. Natasha Wilson and Robi Long took fifth and eighth with 20:33 and 20:56, respectively. Anna Hurd finished in 21:12, as did Katie Wire in 23:11. All the girls came in the Top 35 with times that would have qualified individually for Districts.
The boys team came in third overall and second among SPSL 2A teams, a record placing for sub-districts. They exceeded the sixth placing predicted by their season performance.
“Taking third place within two leagues is a huge accomplishment for them,” Chapman said.
Arturo Perez led the way with a ninth-placing 17:02 finish, and earned league first team honors. Following were Nate Weber at 17:17, Jordan Landes at 17:19, and Josh Goodsell at 17:29; all three were awarded league second team honors. Thomas Oliver rounded out the Spartan boys top five at 17:55.
The district meet takes place Saturday at American Lake Golf Course in Tacoma. The girls race is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m., followed by the boys at 1:10 p.m. The top five girls teams and top six boys teams will advance to state competition.
