After its big performance in the fall, the Sumner High boys golf team returns to the greens to see how it measures up with the best in the state at the 2A state tournament Tuesday and today, Wednesday, at The Classic Golf Course in Spanaway.
The Spartans’ Tom Murphy qualified for the state tournament May 17 and will join teammates Brandon Barlow, Austin Spanier and Kai Taylor in the two-day event.
Murphy tied for fourth with an 82 during the district tournament at Gold Mountain Golf Complex in Bremerton for the final state spots. Teammate Carson Dunham, a last-minute addition, played well after a rough first hole to post an 87. Coach Casey Adcox said Joe Bethards played well on the back nine and posted a 91.
On the ladies side, Rebecca Turcotte and Karleigh Warner are warming up for the girls state tournament also Tuesday and May 25 at Spanaway Lake Golf Course.

Anna Babbitt and Megan Charron took advantage of their opportunity at the district playoff tournament May 16 and parlayed it into a spot on the state roster.
Babbitt finished at 94 with Charron one stroke behind to take the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Enumclaw’s Madeline Petellin won the tournament with an 88.
The ladies tee off the 3A state girls tournament Tuesday morning at Liberty Lake Golf Course near Spokane. The top golfers advance to Day 2 May 25.
