High School Lacrosse in Washington state: A combination of basketball, soccer and hockey, more than 2,300 high school students representing 75 boys and 49 girls varsity and junior varsity teams play high school lacrosse in Washington state. Coordination, agility, quickness and speed are highly prized qualities in this outdoor spring, sport played on a soccer field with end-to-end action. Easy to pick-up, with high schools and high school clubs throughout eastern and western Washington offering the sport since 1979, many football, basketball and volleyball players join their school’s lacrosse team to build on their athletic skills. Club teams versus athletic department teams: Lacrosse teams at the high school level that are not funded by their athletic departments are considered ASB club sports function as a student athletic club within the high school. Several programs that are in early growth phases are made up of students from multiple high schools. As these clubs grow, it is likely that they will split off into unique teams for their local high schools.

Expansion: Lacrosse is one of the fastest growing high school sports in the country and in Washington state.

Five boys lacrosse teams from eastern Washington, southwestern Washington and Skagit County have joined the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association during the past two years. Eastern Washington – Three Rivers (Tri Cities) and Selah (2009), Wenatchee (2008); Southwest Washington – King’s Way (2009); Skagit County – Skagit (Mount Vernon) (2009).

High school lacrosse in Washington has seen double-digit growth in five of the last seven years.
