Sumner and Bonney Lake high school gymnasts didn’t fare too well as a team Jan. 19 – finishing third and fourth, respectively, in a four-team meet – but a number of competitors posted personal-best scores.
Also, Bonney Lake’s team total of 148.55 was a season high.
Competing in the Panther gymnasium, the local team ran into tough competition in Class 4A foes Thomas Jefferson, which placed first with 171 points, and Auburn Mountainview, second with 169.4. Sumner totaled 157.35.
Sumner High’s Kimi Nakayama was the top local competitor in the all-around, placing eighth. She scored 8.4 in the vault, 9.45 on the beam, 8.5 in the floor exercise and 6.9 on the bars. Bonney Lake’s Kelsey Wells-Henderson was ninth all-around after scoring 8.35 in the vault, 6.8 on the bars, 9.15 on the beam and 8.7 in the floor exercise. Sumner’s Aja Ruswick also cracked the Top 10 all-around with scores of 8.2 in the vault, 6.4 on the bars, 9.2 on the beam and 9.10 in the floor exercise.
A handful of Spartans and Panthers scored individually in the Top 10 in each of the four events.

Beam: Tinsley, tied for second; Nakayama, fourth; Ruswick, sixth; Wells-Henderson, seventh.
