The entire Sumner Spartans gymnastics team is headed to this weekend’s district meet, thanks to a third-place finish at Saturday’s subdistrict event at Kentwood High School.

Subdistricts brought together teams from the South Puget Sound League 3A, Narrows League, Olympic League and Western Cascade Conference. The Spartans trailed only Auburn Mountainview and North Kitsap in the final team standings.

The district meet, to be staged at Auburn Mountainview, is the final stop before the Feb. 20-21 state meet at the Tacoma Dome. The district’s top three teams, 14 individuals and five all-arounds will earn Dome trips.

Sumner’s successful subregional experience was headed by Rachel Heckroth, who placed third in the all-around. She won the balance beam competition with a score of 9.575, was third in the vault, 9.15, and bars, 8.0, and placed fourth in the floor exercise, 9.075.

Aja Ruswick had her best meet of the year, according to coach Kimmie Marton, and was 10th in the all-around. She placed ninth in the floor exercise, 10th in both the vault and bars, and was 12th on the bars. Lisbet Fernandez was a notch back in 11th place in the all-around. Her best showing was in the floor exercise, where she placed eighth.

Also competing for the Spartans were Stephanie Josten, 23rd in the all-around, and Hayley Markstrom, 30th place. Rachel O’Donnell was 36th, competing in three events, and Kayla O’Daniel competed in the vault.
