A long winter hiatus, made even longer by rough weather, came to a sudden end for the Sumner High gymnasts.
The team competed in a three-way meet Friday against Auburn and Rogers high schools, competed again Monday (results coming too late to be posted here) and will host their first meet of the season tonight, Wednesday, taking on Thomas Jefferson, Kentridge and Decatur. Tonight’s meet begins at 7 in the SHS gymnasium.
The Spartans came out on top Friday, scoring 145.05 team points. Auburn was a close second with 143.10 and Rogers tallied 133.90.
In the all-around scoring, Sumner’s Rachel Heckroth topped the field while teammate Lisbet Fernandez placed fourth, Aja Ruswick was fifth, Rachel O’Donnel was eighth and Stephanie Josten placed ninth.
Heckroth won both the vault and floor routine, was second on the bars and tied for second on the beam. Fernandez tied for third in the floor routine and was fifth on the beam, seventh on the bars and eighth in the vault. Ruswick was fourth on the beam and bars, tied for sixth in the vault and was 11th in the floor routine.
Sumner’s Michael Tiesta tied for first in the vault. Boys are allowed to compete individually, but their scores do not count toward team totals.
