The Sumner High fastpitch crew’s roller coaster ride continued last week as it went to 6-6 in South Puget Sound League 3A play by using 15 hits and five Lancer errors to clobber Lakes 12-4 April 28 and slipped past Franklin Pierce 4-1 on the road Thursday.

“Our veteran pitcher, Katie Littlefield, said before that Franklin Pierce contest that she was soooo ready to be in the pressure-cooker against the Cardinals,” Sumner coach Kim Franett-Fergus said, “and I guess she must have been, because she went out and pitched the best game she has ever pitched for us against Franklin Pierce, right when we needed it most.”

Littlefield did something she has never done in her career as the Sumner ace on the hill – she not only fanned five Cardinal batters, but additionally she didn’t give up a single free pass to FPHS in seven innings of mound work. This achievement made a notable difference in the tilt too, as besides two Spartan errors, the Lady Cards had to earn everything they got.

Junior shortstop Krysta Beers went 2-for-3 from the dish with a double and junior left fielder Kari Hester also went 2-for-3 contributing two runs batted in.

Meanwhile, Sumner pretty much puts its season on the line this week as it traveled to White River Tuesday to clash with a determined Hornet squad, with the results of that contest coming to late to include here.

Then, the Spartan girls will engage undefeated Bonney Lake in their final affair of the regular season – a game Sumner has to win if plans on moving on to the second season. That rivalry game is at at 4 p.m. Thursday in Sumner.
