Athletes from Enumclaw High and White River headed to Tacoma last week for three days of running, jumping and throwing, joining peers from all corners of Washington.
The event was the state track and field championships which featured competitors from the Class 2A, 3A and 4A ranks. All the action took place at Mount Tahoma High School.
Here’s how the Plateau students fared.
ENUMCLAW BOYS
The foursome making up Enumclaw’s 4×100 relay team finished second in their heat Friday and the time of 42.81 seconds qualified the crew for the next day’s finals. On Saturday, the EHS team slipped a bit, finished in 43.53 seconds and walked off with eighth-place honors. Making up the relay team were Louis Chevalier, Cooper Rodarte, Kaden Kranz and Cole Olson.
Cole Olson ran the 100-meter dash Thursday afternoon. His time of 11.14 left him 13th in a field of 32, not fast enough to advance to Saturday’s 3A finals. A day later, Olson was sprinting his way through 200 meters; with only eight advancing, his time of 22.52 seconds brought his state experience to a close.
Amos Hall clocked a time of 16.30 seconds in Thursday’s preliminary heats of the 110-meter hurdles. Placing 18th among all the 3A hurdlers he failed to advance to the finals. On Friday, Hall finished the 300-meter hurdles in 40.68 seconds, finishing 14th in a group where only the top eight advanced.
Marcell Lensegrav-Obot performed Saturday morning, competing in the 3A triple jump. His effort of 41 feet, 5 inches left him in 17th place.
Porter Rodarte competed in Thursday’s discus competition. With a top throw of 125 feet, 4 inches, he placed 20th and was limited to the prelims.
WHITE RIVER BOYS
By placing second in his Friday heat of the 800-meter run, Michael Marlow was guaranteed a spot in Saturday’s finals. During that preliminary heat, he finished in 1 minute, 55.75 seconds. On the state meet’s final day, Marlow improved a bit to 1:55.29 and jogged off with seventh-place honors.
Dainton Neff had qualified for the Class 3A state meet in two events. In Thursday’s discus competition, he unleashed a throw of 149 feet, 11 inches, good for 10th place in the field of 23 but not enough to advance to the state finals. In Friday’s shot put competition, Neff was guilty of a foul and was eliminated from the field.
The Hornets’ 4×400 relay team landed in 22nd place Thursday after finishing with a time of 3 minutes, 30.19 seconds. Making up the relay crew – which did not move along to the finals – were Braden Eames, Cannon Ross, Hunter Maris and Michael Marlow.
Jorden Goethals finished in the top half of a 3A field that began with 20 high jumpers. Nine competitors were done by the time the bar hit 6 feet and Goethals was among the four who topped out at that height.
Hunter Dahlstrom joined the state cast in the shot put. He turned in a toss of 42 feet, 10.25 inches and placed 19th.
WHITE RIVER GIRLS
Trista Turgeon, who owns the White River record in the 100-meter hurdles, placed fifth at the Class 3A state meet in that event. She had advanced to Friday’s finals after posting a time of 15.14 seconds during Thursday’s preliminaries, the fourth-best time of the day. On Friday, she dropped her time to 15.05 seconds to claim No. 5 honors. Also on Friday, Turgeon competed in the 300-meter hurdles; her time of 46.39 seconds wasn’t fast enough to get her into the next day’s finals.
Paeton Poelman had qualified for the 3A state meet in both distance races. She ran the 1,600 meters Thursday afternoon, clocking a time of 5 minutes, 10.10 seconds. Her time was good for 15th place. On Saturday she finished the 3,200 meters in 11 minutes, 17.06 seconds, the No. 14 finisher to cross the line.
Vivian Kingston had qualified for the 3A state meet in a pair of events. At 800 meters, she circled the oval twice in 2 minutes, 17.31 seconds. Earlier on Friday, she posted a time of 1 minute, 03.06 seconds in the 400 meters. In both races her times weren’t enough to push her into Saturday’s finals.
ENUMCLAW GIRLS
Lillian Haas and 20 others lined up Friday afternoon for the 800 meters. Circling the Mount Tahoma track twice in 2 minutes, 20.05 seconds she claimed 16th place.
Senna Burt waited until Saturday to compete in the 3A girls high jump but was rewarded with a Top 10 finish. She cleared 5 feet, 1 inch to finish in a tie for ninth place.
