University of Washington quarterback Jake Locker is excited about the upcoming college football season under new Husky coach Steve Starkisian.

The coaching staff and players are looking to improve upon last season’s 0-12 record – the worst mark in modern times. Starkisian replaced Tyrone Willingham.

“I’m excited about this season and our coaching staff,” Locker said. “They’re younger and bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm to our guys and the program.

“These guys have come from winning programs and they know what it takes to win in this league. With the knowledge and confidence is a different thing we now have.”

Locker said Starkisian installed an offense similar to the one he employed while serving as offensive coordinator at USC.

“We’ll be more of a pro-style offense,” Locker said. “I like it and think it will be good for me. It will give me an opportunity to play at the next level. We did great with it this spring.”

Locker said the Huskies’ spring practice was a good one – up-tempo, fast-paced. “I think we got a lot done and was productive,” he said.

As for being mentioned as a possible Heisman Trophy candidate, Locker will take it in stride.

“Any time you are mentioned to receive an award like the Heisman is a blessing,” Locker said. “You can’t let it affect your season.”

Locker said one goal for the UW this season is to make it to a bowl game.

“Some of the enjoyment of the game was lost last year,” he said. “I love this game. I think we need to get that back and when we do, wins will come.”

Locker missed most of last season with a broken right thumb. The injury, he said, has healed.

The Huskies open the 2009 season at home against Louisiana State University.
