Gosailgo, the longest price in the four-horse field, romped to a five-length victory over Exclusive Diva in the $50,000 Boeing Handicap for older fillies and mares Sunday at Emerald Downs.

E Z Kitty finished third after a slow break, and Champagneandcaviar finished fourth.

Ridden by Debbie Hoonan at 116 lbs, Gosailgo ran one mile in 1:35.08 and paid $20.20 and $4.40. Robert J. Anderson is the trainer for owner Greame Hope of Burnaby, British Columbia.

A 4-year-old B.C.-bred by Finality-Sailpost, Gosailgo led through fractions of :24.31, :47.23, 1:10.84 and 1:22.72. She held a three-length lead into the stretch, and had plenty left to hold off 4-to-5 betting favorite Exclusive Diva and 6-to-5 second choice E Z Kitty.

Based at Hastings Racecourse, Gosailgo had made two earlier trips to Emerald Downs this season, finishing fourth in the May 12 Hastings Handicap won by E Z Kitty and third in the June 9 Washington State Legislators Stakes won by Exclusive Diva.

Exclusive Diva, ridden by Juan Gutierrez at 121 lbs, chased Gosailgo from flag fall to finish, but settled for second place, and paid $2.60 for place.

E Z Kitty, ridden by Anne Sanguinetti at co-high weight of 121 lbs, finished third, 4 ¾-lengths back of Exclusive Diva. The six-time stakes winner prefers to freewheel up front, and might have been compromised by a tardy break.

Gosailgo, meanwhile, had smooth sailing on the lead.

“She went up to the lead really easy,” Hoonan said. “She was really game. Underneath me, she felt like she knew what she was doing, and that she was in charge.

“It felt like we were going really easy and we really were. I was really surprised that (E Z Kitty and Exclusive Diva) didn’t go to the lead. I thought they’d be out there wingin’ and dingin’, but I guess they were trying to play a different game today and it worked in our favor. I could feel I had a lot of horse left, so I just waited and waited as long as I could.”

Gosailgo has an overall record of 4-1-2 in 11 starts with earnings of $96,739, including $27,500 for Sunday’s triumph. The chestnut filly also scored a restricted stakes victory last year at her home track.

For Hoonan, the win came in her first mount back after missing nearly a month with a leg injury.

“It’s just surreal coming back to win this race after an injury,” she said. “It hasn’t even really hit me yet. I don’t see the injury as a bad break really. It’s just an opportunity to come back and show who you are.”
