Bonney Lake’s wrestling squad finished third among six South Puget Sound League 3A squads with 279 during the weekend’s subregional tournament at Auburn Mountainview High and advanced a dozen grapplers on to this weekend’s 20-team West Central District III regional tournament.

Bonney Lake will host the Friday-Saturday affair.

“The top five teams in the state reside within our region, in Yelm, Enumclaw, Kelso, Bonney Lake and Decatur; so you know there is going to be some unbelievable action,” said BLHS wrestling coach Anthony Clarke, whose team took three individual titles, not to mention numerous second and third places at subregionals.

It all started with Brandon Cunningham, who gave up nearly 20 pounds to every wrestler he faced, and still managed to come away with a second-place effort at 106 pounds.

Colton Tracy and Andrew Cunningham captured titles. Tracy cruised to an 11-5 decision over his Lakes High opponent and Cunningham ended up shutting out his old nemesis, Enumclaw’s Tyke Reid, with a close 3-0 verdict.

At 126 pounds, Caid Caveness reached the title bout, but couldn’t quite take home the gold as he lost a 7-4 to Decatur’s Nick Lindholm.

Bonney Lake 138-pounder Jordan Magrum took third, as did Matt Yuste, who defeated Enumclaw’s Falani Gill at 145.

Bonney Lake then had three wrestlers grabbing second-place honors in Tyler Hernandez, 152, Chili Sabin, 160, and Jake Leuders, 170.

Bonney Lake struck gold at 182 pounds as Evan Dorsey blanked Decatur’s Spencer Smith 6-0.

“Evan has been fun to watch in his senior campaign as he has shown immense improvement and truly matured as a wrestler,” Clarke said.

Another vastly improved wrestler, according to Clarke, is 195-pounder Jordan Schultz, who advanced to the finals before falling to Enumclaw’s T.J. Cormier.

At 220 pounds, Kasey Board will act as an alternate at regionals as he finished fifth.
