By virtue of his consistent play and top finishes in tournaments in the state of Washington, Enumclaw’s Tyler Salsbury finished the junior golf season with enough points to qualify for the 2009 Hogan Cup team, representing Washington. Salsbury finished 5.5 points away from being the Most Outstanding Junior Golfer in the state for 2009. That honor went to Zach Wanderscheid of Goldendale, Wash.

The Hogan Cup will take place in Portland, Ore., Aug. 22 and 23.

The competition gets its name from Eddie Hogan, who was the head professional at Riverside Golf and Country Club from 1939 until his drowning death in 1968. In honor of his memory, and his contributions to junior golf, the Eddie Hogan Cup Team matches were inaugurated in 1969. Riverside Golf and Country Club plays host annually.

These matches pit the best junior players from the western United States and Canada against each other in a team format. The four-man teams use their three lowest 18-hole scores each day to determine their team total. Medals are awarded to the top three teams as well as the top three individuals in the field. Competing in the Hogan Cup matches is an honor bestowed to few individuals. Though the field is small, it is select. For example, such tour players as Bobby Clampett, Fred Couples, Scott Simpson, Rick Fehr, Robert Gamez, Kirk Triplett, Peter Jacobsen and Tiger Woods have competed.
